FEcheckit! is a simple finite-element modeling and analysis tool designed for the iPad and the Mac. It can build and perform a linear elastic analysis on a variety of simple (and not-so-simple) models using pre-defined ‘Model Builders’. It features in-core and out-of-core Gauss Elimination solvers and four different element types (2D Plane Stress, 2D Plane Strain, 3D Shell, and 3D Solid) to suit a variety of modeling needs.

FEcheckit!’s graphics engine is a custom, multi-pass scene graph (a directed acyclic graph, or DAG) with a wide range of capabilities. The actual rendering engine uses a new, open-source technology aptly named ‘MetalANGLE’ that automatically translates OpenGL ES shader functionality to Apple’s proprietary Metal API. This translation layer is quite robust, resulting in highly performant 3D graphics.

Because MetalANGLE is a relatively new technology, stable builds currently only exist for iOS 15 and greater, so FEcheckit! requires iOS 15 or later. FEcheckit! is currently not available for iPhone (the available screen space is too restrictive) but works quite well on the iPad Mini and larger. FEcheckit! for Mac (designed for iPad) should be available when the iPad version is available.
